Heathrow refueler strike still on

LONDON, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- No progress was reported Tuesday in talks between management and the union of workers who refuel aircraft at Heathrow International Airport in London.

The Transport and General Workers Union said 40 workers for the refueling company AFS will walk out in a dispute over pay, pensions and sick pay in a 48-hour strike Friday and Saturday.

The union wants the worker's to get a salary increase of $39,528 a year to $44,919 a year.

"The company is playing for high stakes and the clock is ticking," said Kevin Hall of the union. "We are dealing with a serious situation, but the company is treating it with disdain."

AFS refuels about 36 percent of the aircraft at Heathrow.

Airport management had said the proposed 48-hour strike would bring a "degree of disruption," but it would not be "widespread or substantial."
