LONDON, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Rock groups have banded together to raise money for famine relief in Sudan's Darfur region, the BBC reports.
REM, David Gray, Ash and other stars donated their services to provide 14 tracks. The album is available only through download from Oxfam's bignoisemusic.com site on the Web for just over $14. Almost $9 of the purchase price goes to Oxfam Sudan.
The 18 months of violence in Darfur has created more than 1 million refugees. The U.N. calls the conflict the world's worst humanitarian disaster.
The new rock album was inspired by LiveAid, the rock music effort coordinated by Bob Geldof that raised money for Ethiopian famine relief in 1985.
"Men, women, and children are still dying every day in Sudan," Damon Gough, who performs as Badly Drawn Boy, told the BBC. "People like us might not have the power to stop the violence but at least we can try and help the people affected by it."
