In a message to Pakistani leaders, Indian President A.P.J Abdul Kalam said: "India is firmly committed to the establishment of a relationship of peace, friendship and cooperation with Pakistan.

"Recent interaction between the two countries, both at the level of government and people, augur well," said Kalam. "The ongoing process needs to be deepened and intensified in an atmosphere free from terrorism and violence."

In a message, issued Saturday Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said Pakistan also wants to continue the peace process and would like to promote friendly relations at both government and private levels.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars and countless skirmishes since their independence. Both also possess nuclear weapons and have a missile program for delivering these weapons.

Their relations began to improve after a landmark peace agreement in January. Since then both have taken several steps to reduce tensions.
