Germany: World needs 'moral leadership'

WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) -- German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said Wednesday the prison abuse scandal would restore "the moral leadership" of the United States.

"We need the United States, we need the moral leadership of the United States; it's important for the West, for all of us," he told reporters after a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. "And therefore, we are looking forward that this situation will lead, I think, to a restoration of the leadership, of the moral leadership, of the United States because this is crucial for all of us."

Powell said the two countries agreed the alleged prison abuse was "deplorable," but praised many U.S. service personnel who were playing a constructive role in Iraq by providing security and helping in reconstruction.

"We are going to get to the bottom of this and make sure that justice is done," he said.

The meeting between the two men was the third in 10 days.
