Former Spanish PM admits mistakes

MADRID, May 3 (UPI) -- Spain's former prime minister, in a book published Monday, admits his government was too focused on terrorism by only Basque separatists.

Jose Marie Aznar was turned out of office in an election held immediately after the March bombings of commuter trains in Madrid. At first, Aznar blamed the bombings on the Basque group ETA, continuing to do so even after evidence was found suggesting Islamic fundamentalists were responsible.

In "Eight Years of Government," Aznar admits his government made some mistakes.

"Perhaps the successes achieved in the fight against ETA in recent years had led us to lower our guard against the fundamentalist threat," he said.

Aznar supported President Bush and the war against Saddam Hussein , although many of his countrymen did not. Socialist leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero campaigned against the war and promised to withdraw Spanish troops from Iraq if elected -- a promise he has kept.
