Chirac has become the first foreign leader invited to visit the space center, one of the most secret sites of the Russian strategic forces. Most of that visit was closed to the press.

Chirac invited Putin to take part in the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary tour of the Normandy landings on D-Day, June 6, when 156,000 Allied troops swept from nearly 3,000 ships across a front 30 miles long.

The celebration will draw the heads of state of 15 countries.
