Analysis on USA Today scandal due Friday

WASHINGTON, March 29 (UPI) -- The largest daily newspaper in the United States is about to receive an exhaustive post-mortem on one of journalism's worst scandals.

An analysis of how reporter Jack Kelley could have slipped so many apparently fictitious stories past editors at USA Today is expected by Friday, the New York Times reported Monday.

Under the leadership of editor John Seigenthaler, one of a group of outside journalists examining Kelley's stories -- their content and their handling -- 70 USA Today staffers have been interviewed.

Though it is not clear how public the report will be, the Times said six sources within the flagship newspaper of the Gannett group think the report's outlines are clear.

Three themes are expected to stand out: the ambitions of an upstart national newspaper, the perceived favoritism of editors and Kelley's considerable charm combined to let Kelley's deceptions and fabrications get published.

Kelley, 43, resigned under pressure in January.
