Critics seek halt to S.F. gay weddings

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- A conservative group filed a motion with California Supreme Court Wednesday seeking to halt the issuance of same-sex marriage licenses in San Francisco.

The Alliance Defense Fund said it was representing three San Franciscans who objected to what they saw as a "blatant lawbreaking" by city and county government and wanted the practice of giving licenses to homosexuals halted immediately.

The ADF and other opponents of the city's actions contend Mayor Gavin Newsom did not have the authority to ignore a state law limiting marriage to heterosexual couples.

There was no immediate word on when the court might rule on the request. State Attorney General John Lockyer planned to file a similar request with the high court on Friday.

More than 3,000 gay couples were married in San Francisco following Newsome's Feb. 12 order, prompting President Bush to announce he supported a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.
