PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- The newly appointed European Union commissioner from the Czech Republic resigned Friday, blaming politicians from his country.

Milos Kuzvart was to have been the republic's first commissioner.

Kuzvart, appointed Wednesday, had been scheduled to take up his post in May. His resignation is considered an embarrassment for the government of Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla, the Financial Times reported Friday.

In announcing his resignation, Kuzvart singled out Cyril Svoboda, the Christian Democrat foreign minister, saying he made his position "impossible."

Kuzvart's critics had questioned whether he was qualified for the post. A former environment minister, Kuzvart had a very low profile even in his home country.

He was chosen for the E.U. post by the ruling Social Democrats.
