Libyan nuke materials arrive in U.S.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A planeload of components and documents from Libya's nuclear weapons program landed Tuesday in Tennessee for U.S. inspection, the White House said.

The cargo, believed destined for the Oak Ridge nuclear facility, comprised 55,000 pounds of equipment, including centrifuge parts for enriching uranium and UF-6 uranium hexaflouride, used for feedstock to enrich uranium.

The White House said ballistic missile guidance systems were also included.

President George W. Bush announced in December that Libya's Col. Moammar Gadhafi, once a prime supporter of terrorism, had agreed to give up his weapons of mass destruction after years of sanctions.

Negotiations with the United States and Britain began about the time U.S. troops prepared to roll into Iraq to depose Saddam Hussein.

Spokesman Scott McClellan said the aircraft landed at McGhee Tyson Airport outside Knoxville. Another plane had landed with Libyan cargo the week before.

He said the shipments represented "real progress" in Libya meeting its commitments.
