Roh's S. Korean funding scandal grows

SEOUL, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- The illegal funding scandal surrounding South Korea's President Roh Moo-hyun has jumped Tuesday to huge proportions worth as much as $42 million.

While two of Roh's aides have already been arrested for accepting as much as $956,000 in illegal campaign contributions, Roh's opponent Lee Hoi-chang claims the Grand National Party took $42 million in illegal funds.

Tuesday, Roh repeated a pledge he made on the weekend to resign if implicated in a funding scandal, the BBC said.

"If it comes to light that the funds exceed one-tenth (of that of the opposition) I will keep my pledge to resign without going through the confidence-vote process," Roh said.

He appealed to the country to wait for the results of a widening investigation into the political funding scandal, before making a judgment.

"Once the investigation is concluded, I'll reveal everything I need to the public and then ask for a confidence test," he said.
