Kentucky's Lucas to retire from House

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Rep. Ken Lucas, D-Ky., said Monday he will not seek re-election in 2004.

Lucas, currently in his third term, is one of the more conservative Democrats in the chamber.

In 2000 he garnered national attention by announcing he would not be attending his party's national convention because he had no desire to support Al Gore given the former vice president's positions on guns, abortion and tobacco.

Lucas was last elected with 51 percent of the vote. George W. Bush carried his district in 2000, 61 percent to 37 percent for Gore.
