Charles Moose resigns as police chief

ROCKVILLE, Md., June 18 (UPI) -- Montgomery County, Md., Police Chief Charles Moose resigned Wednesday, after county officials prohibited him from accepting any book or movie deals.

Moose gained worldwide attention as lead investigator of the 2002 Washington-area sniper attacks. At a Wednesday news conference he said he will resign, effective June 28.

The police chief has been at odds with the Montgomery County Ethics Commission over book and movie deals, which the commission told him he cannot accept. A civil lawsuit Moose has filed against the commission is pending.

Moose's book, "Three Weeks in October," is to be released this October, one year after the sniper attacks. He also has been signed as a consultant to a movie being made about the sniper manhunt.

Lee Malvo and John Muhammad are charged in the series of sniper attacks last fall that killed 10 people and wounded four others in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
