Fighting approaches Liberian capital

LONDON, June 6 (UPI) -- Liberian rebels fight with government troops just outside of the capital forcing thousands to flee into the city.

The BBC reported government troops regained control of a strategic bridge only four kilometers from the capital.

A spokesman for the World Food Program told the BBC, "People are in the street, in the rain. The situation remains very tense in Monrovia."

The government remains in control of only three out of 15 counties in Liberia.

The rebels' advances come at a difficult time. Peace talks to resolve the violence in Liberia had started in Ghana on Wednesday when U.N prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Liberian President Charles Taylor, who then flew to Monrovia from the talks.

Ghanaian officials did not attempt to arrest Taylor, who is accused of crimes against humanity.
