WESTMINSTER, Colo., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- All 24 schools in unincorporated Adams County were locked down Wednesday after a male student pulled a small handgun on another student inside Ranum High School.
The teen fired several shots outside the building as he fled.
School resource officer Mike Rucker captured him in a park near a middle school three blocks away. No one was injured.
Sheriff's police said the youth had a small semi-automatic pistol and apparently fired shots into the air during the chase. He was held at the Adams County Jail.
The incident began about 8:30 a.m. after classes were under way at the high school northwest of Denver. Ranum High School has an enrollment of about 1,400.
Yellow crime scene tape was stretched across a grassy area of the schoolyard where shell casings were collected as evidence. All 24 schools in District 50 were locked down after the incident but class was not dismissed early.
"I was waiting for something like this to happen," a 16-year-old student told the Rocky Mountain News. "Kids bring guns to school every day. They show them off to other kids and threaten kids."
