Big chill grips much of nation

Bitter cold spread from the nation's heartland to the South and Mid-Atlantic states Thursday as winter held sway over much of the United States. Sub-zero temperatures produced dangerous wind chills across the Midwest and snow and cold spread from Georgia to the Carolinas.
