French Open, Belmont Stakes, Mayweather bout pack sports weekend

MIAMI, June 4 (UPI) -- The French Open, Belmont Stakes and a boxing bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Logan Paul pack the weekend sports schedule. Several NBA and NHL playoff games also will take place from Friday through Sunday.

Outside of the main events, the MLB regular season, two NASCAR races and the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament will provide additional entertainment for sports fans.

All eyes are on Roland Garros this week and next week for tennis' clay-court Grand Slam.

Thirteen-time champion Rafael Nadal of Spain is the favorite to win the French Open men's singles title. Defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland is the favorite to win the women's singles title.

French Open

The first series of men's and women's third-round matches at the 2021 French Open air from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT Friday on the Tennis Channel.

The second window of third-round matches is from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT Saturday on the Tennis Channel and from noon to 2 p.m. on NBC. Additional third-round coverage airs from 2 to 6 p.m. on Peacock.

The first series of fourth-round matches airs from 5 a.m. to noon EDT Sunday on the Tennis Channel, from noon to 2 p.m. on NBC and from 2 to 6 p.m. on Peacock.

Three American women are in action Friday in the singles circuit. Madison Keys battles Belarusian Victoria Azarenka at 6 a.m. EDT. No. 8 Serena Williams faces Danielle Collins at 10 a.m.

No. 5 Sofia Kenin will battle Jessica Pegula in an match between Americans on Saturday. Coco Gauff will takes on fellow American Jennifer Brady in another third-round match in Paris. American Sloane Stephens will battles Czech Karolina Muchova.

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and Swiatek are among the other top-ranked women's players in action this weekend.

Russia's Daniil Medvedev, Germany's Alexander Zverev and Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas are among the top men's players in action Friday on the singles circuit.

American Reilly Opelka battles Medvedev at 8:15 a.m. EDT on Court Suzanne Lenglen. American John Isner faces Tsitsipas at 3 p.m. in another third-round match. American's Marcos Giron and Steven Johnson also have third-round matches in Paris.

Serbia's Novak Djokovic, Areginia's Diego Schwartzman, Italian Matteo Berrettini and Switzerland's Roger Federer are among the top men's players in action Saturday.

The women's singles final is at 9 a.m. EDT June 12 on NBC. The men's final is at 9 a.m. June 13 on NBC.

Belmont Stakes

The 2021 Belmont Stakes, the third and final leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, is scheduled to start at 6:49 p.m. EDT Saturday and airs on NBC.

Essential Quality and Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer are among the favorites to win Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, who finished third at the Preakness, is suspended from the Belmont Stakes because the colt tested positive for a banned substance.

Hot Rod Charlie, who finished third at the Derby and skipped the Preakness, is another favorite.

Race favorite Tiz the Law, ridden by Jockey Manuel Franco, won the 2020 Belmont Stakes and its $535,000 first-place prize. The winner this year will receive $600,000 of the $1 million prize purse.

Boxing bout

Floyd Mayweather Jr. looks to push his undefeated record to 51-0 with a fight against YouTube star Logan Paul on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. The event will air on Showtime Pay-Per-View.

Mayweather, 44, last entered the ring for a win over UFC star Conor McGregor in 2017. Paul, 26, lost to fellow YouTuber Olajide Olayinka Williams in his only bout in 2019 in Los Angeles.

Mayweather, regarded as one of the greatest boxers in history, is a heavy favorite to win. The main card starts at 8 p.m. EDT. Mayweather and Paul are expected to enter the ring about 10 p.m.

Former NFL star Chad Johnson will battle Brian Maxwell in the first fight of the main card. Then, Jarrett Hurd will fight Luis Arias in the second match. Badou Jack will face Dervin Colina in the third match.
