New York Mets blank Philadelphia Phillies in home opener

Jacob deGrom and three New York relievers combined on an seven-hit shutout as the Mets won their home opener, 2-0, over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.

DeGrom (1-1), the reigning NL Rookie of the Year, pick up his first win of the season, allowing seven hits, striking out three and walking one over 6 1/3 innings. Carlos Torres, Jerry Blevins and Jeurys Familia didn't allow a hit over the final 2 2/3 innings to secure the win for New York.

Juan Lagares and Travis d'Arnaud drove in a run apiece for the Mets, whose offseason alterations to the right-center field wall didn't result in monstrous offensive numbers in the first game at Citi Field this season.

New York moved the wall in 10 feet in right-center this past winter, but the offense managed just six hits against Philadelphia pitching.

Newcomer Michael Cuddyer had two of the hits for the Mets, winners of two straight. The Mets' next field modification might be to eliminate the lights. All of New York's wins so far this season have come during the day (4-0).

Freddy Galvis went 3-for-3 for the Phillies, losers of two in a row. Cody Asche added two hits for Philadelphia, which was shutout for the second time this season.

Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Harang (1-1) suffered the tough-luck loss. The right-hander allowed just one run on four hits in six innings, striking out one and walking two.

The Mets got to Harang in the fourth inning. After Daniel Murphy doubled with one out and moved to third on a fly out to right by d'Arnaud, Lagares' comebacker to the mound was mishandled by Harang, allowing Murphy to score and Lagares to reach on what was ruled an infield hit.

The Phillies threatened in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one out to force deGrom from the game, but Torres came on to get pinch- hitter Cesar Hernandez to ground into a fielder's choice and strike out Ben Revere looking to end the inning.

New York added an insurance run in the eighth when Cuddyer singled and moved to third on Chase Utley's fielding error off the bat of Murphy. D'Arnaud followed with a sac fly to make it a two-run game.

Familia made it interesting in the ninth, walking Carlos Ruiz to start the inning. However, Grady Sizemore grounded into a double-play and Asche lined out to center to end the game.

Game Notes

DeGrom has lasted at least six innings in 15 straight starts ... NY's Curtis Granderson went 0-for-2 and is now hitless in his last 10 at-bats ... Matt Harvey makes his first home start of the season on Tuesday for the Mets, while David Buchanan counters for the Phillies ... This was the sixth home opener shutout for the Mets, the last coming in 2012 ... The Mets have won 13 of their last 17 against the Phillies.
