NHL: San Jose 4, Phoenix 2

GLENDALE, Ariz., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Dany Heatley and Logan Couture scored second-period goals Monday and the San Jose Sharks went on to defeat Phoenix 4-2.

Heatley's goal on an assist from Couture 4 minutes into the middle frame broke a 1-1 tie and Couture followed with the eventual game-winner 13 minutes later, with the Sharks on a power play.

Patrick Marleau scored while celebrating his 1,000th career game -- all with the Sharks -- and Joe Thornton added an empty-netter in the win.

Antti Niemi made 34 saves for San Jose.

Derek Morris netted a first-period goal and 19-year-old Swedish rookie Oliver Ekman-Larsson notch his first career goal for the Coyotes, whose four-game winning streak was snapped.

Ilya Bryzgalov let in three goals on 35 shots for Phoenix.
