Agassi, Nadal pull out of Masters Cup

SHANGHAI, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Andre Agassi, playing in his first tournament since September, lost in the round-robin and pulled of the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, China.

Agassi, (0-1), lost to fifth-seed Nikolay Davydenko, 6-4, 6-2 in just one hour, 14 minutes at Qi Zhong Stadium and withdrew after the loss saying he had aggravated a left ankle injury. The 24-year-old Russian got his first victory over Agassi in three matches.

Rafael Nadal, a 19-year-old Spaniard, withdrew because of a left foot injury.

Agassi, 35, had been idle since losing to Roger Federer in the U.S. Open final September 11 and will be replaced by Chilean alternate Fernando Gonzalez.

"This is an unfortunate setback," said Agassi, who fell to 0-5 in Shanghai. The American lost a first-round match in a tournament in Shanghai in 2001 and dropped all three of his round-robin matches at the 2002 Masters Cup.
