Europeans expand lead at Ryder Cup

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- The European team scored three points in the foursomes Saturday to take a 11-5 lead going into the final day of the 35th Ryder Cup Matches.

After dominating Friday's play, the Europeans quieted an early rally by the U.S. squad Saturday morning with 1 1/2 points in the fourball matches. The early momentum that the Americans enjoyed faded in the afternoon, leaving the European team three points shy of retaining the Ryder Cup.

Tiger Woods, who won his morning match with Chris Riley, was paired with Davis Love III in the afternoon against Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley. The Irish duo beat the Americans, 4 & 3.

Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald never trailed in their match and knocked off Jim Furyk and Fred Funk, 1-up.

Jay Haas and Chris DiMarco fell 5 & 4 to Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood.

The lone bright spot for the Americans came with Phil Mickelson and David Toms. Mickelson, who sat out the morning session after a dismal showing on Friday, and Toms ousted Miguel Angel Jimenez and Thomas Levet, 4 & 3, for the Americans' only point of the afternoon.
