Roddick survives epic match with Haas

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland lost in the second round of the Olympic tennis tournament Tuesday and Andy Roddick survived an epic match.

Federer suffered a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 setback against Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.

Roddick advanced with a three-set, marathon victory over Germany's Tommy Haas. The American fought off three match points and Haas then did the same before Roddick finally produced a 4-6, 6-3, 9-7 victory.

Roddick will next play Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, who defeated Hyung Talk Lee of South Korea, 7-5, 6-2.

Third-seed Carlos Moya of Spain beat Belgium's Olivier Rochus, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), and American Mardy Fish surprised fifth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

For the second straight Olympics, Marat Safin of Russia made an early exit, losing to Feliciano Lopez of Spain, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Venus Williams, meanwhile, disposed of Slovenia's Maja Matevzic, 6-0, 6-0. Top-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium rolled past the second round by defeating Maria Vento Kabachi of Venezuela, 6-2, 6-1.
