Soriano leads all vote-getters in AL

NEW YORK, June 28 (UPI) -- Texas Rangers second baseman Alfonso Soriano leads all American League vote-getters for the 75th All-Star Game, to be played July 13 in Houston.

In balloting released Monday, Soriano has 2,333,795 votes, over 1.5 million more than his closest pursuer at second base, Pokey Reese of the Boston Red Sox.

The closest race continues to be for the third and final outfield spot. Hideki Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki of Japan are separated by only 57,000 votes, with New York's Gary Sheffield fifth, 90,000 behind his teammate.

Vladimir Guerrero of the Anaheim Angels leads all AL outfielders with nearly 2.1 million votes, 210,000 more than Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez.

With balloting ending Wednesday, the other positions seem to be set.

Yankees Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Jason Giambi have comfortable leads at third base, shortstop and first base, with Ivan Rodriguez of the Detroit Tigers wellat catcher.
