Micheel shares Nissan lead

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Current PGA champion Shaun Micheel shared the opening round lead with Shigeki Maruyama at the Nissan Open Thursday while Tiger Woods faltered.

Micheel and Maruyama were tied at 7-under 64 with Hank Kuehne, the longest driver on the tour, turning in a 65 at the famed Riviera Country Club course.

Defending champion Mike Weir and Fred Couples were among those at 66. John Daly, who last week won for the first time in nine years, overcame a slow start by firing a 3-under 68.

Woods had to settle for a 1-over 72, placing his record streak of cuts made in jeopardy. He will likely have to fire a 70 Friday to survive the cut. Leading money winner Vijay Singh opened with a 71.

Micheel, who outdueled Chad Campbell last summer to become the surprise winner of the PGA, had an eagle and six birdies in his round Thursday.
