Baseball free agents face signing deadline

MIAMI, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- For teams with free agents, Sunday is D-Day.

The biggest question looming before the midnight deadline was whether or not the impasse between Ivan Rodriguez and the world champion Florida Marlins would be broken.

Talks between the two sides broke down on Friday during a conference call.

"I hope our players and fans understand we did make an effort," said General Manager Larry Beinfest. "We're not going to say no definitely to anything. The deadline is still there. Things can always change."

If no deal is reached by then, the Marlins forfeit negotiating rights with Rodriguez until May 1. He cannot be offered arbitration by the Marlins since they agreed contractually not to offer the process when they signed the 10-time All-Star to a one-year contract last winter.

The Marlins reportedly offered Rodriguez a two-year deal worth $16 million. He signed for $10 million last season.

Among other big names on the list are Javy Lopez, Kevin Millwood, Greg Maddux, Bartolo Colon, Miguel Tejada, Roy Oswalt, and Mike Cameron.
