Els, Singh set up semifinal showdown

SURREY, England, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Ernie Els and Vijay Singh both won Friday to set up a semifinal showdown at the HSBC World Match Play Championship.

The other semifinal will be an ironic one between British Open champion Ben Curtis and Thomas Bjorn. It was Bjorn's collapse that helped Curtis walk away with his first career title this summer.

Els and Singh have five major crowns between them and are ranked second and third in the world.

Celebrating his 34th birthday, Els posted a 2-up victory over Tim Clark. Singh advanced when he defeated PGA champion Shaun Micheel on the 38th hole.

Bjorn followed his first-round victory over Masters runner-up Len Mattiace by beating Masters champion Mike Weir, 5 & 4. Without a top-10 finish before or since his amazing triumph at Sandwich, Curtis defeated PGA runner-up Chad Campbell, 5 & 3.
