Philadelphia 34, Washington 21

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- A.J. Feeley threw two touchdown passes and linebacker Carlos Emmons returned a fumble for a score Sunday as the Philadelphia Eagles clinched their second straight NFC East title with a 34-21 victory over the Washington Redskins.

Philadelphia (11-3) extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 4-0 since star quarterback Donovan McNabb went down with a fractured ankle. The Eagles also improved to 10-0 against NFC opponents.

"That was our goal coming into the season," Emmons said. "We wanted to win the division, then we wanted home-field advantage and that's what we're striving for. The other goal is to win the Super Bowl. Anything less than that is a disappointment."

Feeley helped make the final regular-season game in the history of Veterans Stadium a success with a 38-yard touchdown pass to running back Duce Staley in the first quarter and a six-yard strike to Antonio Freeman late in the third.

Feeley improved to 3-0 as the starter since replacing backup Koy Detmer, who is out with a dislocated left elbow.

If the Eagles win their final two games, road contests against Dallas and the New York Giants, they would clinch home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. Philadelphia is tied for the NFL's best record.

Eagles coach Andy Reid knows what homefield could mean to his team.

"I have always said this is a tough place to play," Reid said. "It was evident today. The fans were out of their minds. I think if you go around the league and ask people the place they do not enjoy playing is right here at Veterans Stadium."

The Eagles also won the NFC East last season when they advanced to the conference championship game before losing at St. Louis.

Rookie Patrick Ramsey passed for three touchdowns for the Redskins, who are limping to the finish line in Steve Spurrier's first season as coach. Washington (5-9) has lost three straight and five of its last six games.

Redskins veteran cornerback Darrell Green, who has been with the team since 1983, seemed confused by his club's struggles.

"I think the scary thing about this team is that you look around and everyone seems to be brain swirly," he said. "That is not a good sign because you look in the players' eyes and they really want to win, but you see that they have a puzzled look in their eyes."

The day could not have gotten off to a worse start for Washington, which lost starting running back Stephen Davis to a dislocated right shoulder on the second play from scrimmage when he was tackled by safety Brian Dawkins, who forced a fumble on the play.

Feeley also got off to an inauspicious start, getting intercepted by rookie cornerback Fred Smoot on his first pass attempt.

But Feeley made up for the miscue on the next possession, hitting Staley with a screen pass to the right. Staley cut to the middle of the field and raced down the right side for a 38-yard touchdown, making it 7-0 with 9:02 left in the first quarter.

"That was just a game plan," Feeley said of the screen passes. "We came into this game with an idea that screens are going to work against these guys."

A mistake by the Redskins on special teams helped the Eagles extend the lead. In the waning seconds of the first quarter, cornerback Champ Bailey muffed a punt and Dameane Douglas recovered for the Eagles at the Redskins 27.

Feeley moved the Eagles to the 10, but they had to settle for David Akers' 28-yard field goal on the final play of the opening quarter.

With Ramsey unable to move the Redskins, the Eagles extended the lead on their next possession, going 80 yards in seven plays.

Feeley highlighted the drive on the first play with a 53-yard completion over the middle to fullback Cecil Martin. Staley ran four times for 19 yards around a seven-yard completion by Feeley to Freddie Mitchell.

Feeley played well in the first half, going 10 of 15 for 153 yards and a touchdown, while most of his completions went to his running backs. He finished 16 of 28 for 220 yards.

Staley, who carried 20 times for 62 yards, capped the drive by plowing over from one yard, making it 17-0 with 9:19 left in the first half.

Ramsey finally found success in the waning moments of the half, finding Chris Doering over the middle for a 15-yard touchdown at the two-minute warning. Jason Baker, who struggled all afternoon, helped set up the Redskins' drive with a 24-yard punt to the Washington 44. Baker averaged just 33.4 yards on seven punts.

Any chance the Redskins had at a comeback ended early in the third quarter.

Ramsey and rookie running back Ladell Betts botched a handoff. Emmons picked up the ball with a host of Redskins standing around, pushing surprised offensive lineman David Loverne out of the way from behind and racing 44 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown, extending the lead to 24-7.

"Nobody touched me and I knew it," Emmons said. "I was like I have to get up. I really thought when I tried to get up they were going to tackle me, but nobody did. Someone grabbed my head but I was able to get away from it."

"That fumble for a touchdown was a big play," Ramsey said. "First of all, Ladell and I didn't connect with the handoff. It was a play called at the line. It was just a bad exchange between Ladell and I. Secondly, we should have touched him (Emmons) when he was down. It is frustrating because we did have the opportunity to get ourselves back in the football game."

Feeley, who struggled after his hot start, went four of five for 59 yards on a nine-play, 80-yard drive as the Eagles put the game out of reach on their next possession.

The drive was highlighted with completions of 30 and 14 yards to tight end Chad Lewis. Feeley found Freeman for a six-yard touchdown with two minutes left in the third quater to make it 31-7.

With the game out of reach, Ramsey was able to move his team in the fourth quarter, throwing a 21-yard touchdown pass to Derrius Thompson and finding Rod Gardner with a 30-yard score.

Ramsey finished 23 of 35 for 213 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
