Missouri couple admits sextuplet hoax

GRAIN VALLEY, Mo., April 12 (UPI) -- A Grain Valley, Mo., couple has admitted their story of having sextuplets was a hoax to get enough money to pay their bills, reports said Wednesday.

Police said an acquaintance convinced Sarah and Kris Everson to confess the pregnancy and multiple births, for which the couple had collected donations, were a hoax.

"They have confessed there weren't six kids," Grain Valley Police Chief Aaron Ambrose told The Kansas City (Mo.) Star. "The reason why they did it was for money to pay bills."

"What they're doing is stealing. They're stealing by deceit," Ambrose told The (Independence, Mo.) Examiner.

Past friends and co-workers told the Examiner, which broke the story this week, that Sarah Everson had a long history of making up pregnancies.

The husband and wife were released Tuesday on their own recognizance.

No charges were brought immediately and a friend told the newspaper that donations made to the Eversons would be returned.
