NEW YORK, March 11 (UPI) -- Ellie Goulding has spoken out against claims her hit single "On My Mind" is about fellow singer Ed Sheeran.

Speaking with Seventeen magazine for the upcoming April issue, the British songstress said she was never romantically involved with Sheeran despite their friendship.

"We've known each other for a few years," she said. "I think he's a really nice guy and a brilliant musician. We've bumped into each other and we've hung out and stuff, but the thing is if I hang out with someone, it's instantly like I'm 'dating' them. We were never in a relationship. My song is not about him."

Goulding also cleared up rumors she and One Direction member Niall Horan are an item. "We're still friends," she said. "We went on a few dates, and it was really fun. He's a really, really lovely guy. He's got the biggest sense of humor, he's very caring, and I see him as a genuine friend in the industry."

The singer recently made headlines when she announced she and photographer Conor McDonnell almost drowned in an icy Norwegian lake.

"Note to self don't drive a BV206 over a frozen lake," she wrote alongside a throwback photo of a car sinking in through the ice. The singer was in Norway ahead of her Delirium world tour.
