'Batman vs. Superman' to explore Doomsday's 'mythology'

"To us it really made sense to give [Doomsday] to the audience now," director Zack Snyder said of the villain's inclusion in a recent trailer.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice will explore Doomsday's backstory.

Director Zack Snyder revealed as much in an interview with The Daily Beast after facing criticism for including the villain in the movie's second trailer. Some fans complained the Doomsday scenes gave away too much of the film's plot.

"I know what's in the movie, so I know there's other stuff," Snyder responded. "[Warner Bros. and I] had a long conversation about just taking ownership of that, of giving it to the audience in a controlled way that I felt was consistent with the escalation of the campaign."

Batman v. Superman released a trailer Dec. 2 that appears to show Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) transforming General Zod (Michael Shannon) into Doomsday. Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) are then seen putting their differences aside to team up with Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) against the villain.

"[Doomsday] doesn't just crawl out of the ground," Snyder said. "He has his own mythology, right? So that has to be explored ... To us it really made sense to give [Doomsday] to the audience now. I really wanted to make the audience a promise that... though I'm super excited and happy and fulfilled by the conflict of Batman and Superman, there's also a bigger world to start to think about."

Batman v. Superman opens in theaters March 25, and will be followed by The Justice League: Part One in 2017. The movie released a TV spot on Saturday featuring the Batmobile, which Snyder discussed with MTV News last week.

"I love the design of it," he said of the vehicle. "I love the thing, it drives like crazy. You can skid around, it's like a frickin' race car. And in that way it's super practical. We did a huge chase with it and it drove, which is cool. It's got a big Corvette engine in it and it can just run."

Amy Adams will co-star as Superman's love interest Lois Lane, with Diane Lane as his adoptive mother Martha Kent, Laurence Fishburne as his editor Perry White and Jeremy Irons as Batman's butler Alfred Pennyworth. Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller also appear as Aquaman and The Flash, respectively.
