Lubbock's dad wins $14,000 in damages

CHELMSFORD , England, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The father of a man found dead at entertainer Michael Barrymore's home in England six years ago says he has been paid about $14,000 in damages.

Stuart Lubbock, 31, was found dead in the swimming pool at Barrymore's former home in Essex.

His father, Terry Lubbock, who had filed a claim for more about $21,000 from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, told the Guardian he was "delighted" by the payout.

"I'll put the money into the fighting fund for Stuart," he said. "I am determined that I will get justice for my son and that's what the money will be used for."

A CICA spokesman who said he could not comment on individual cases, however, said that to award compensation: "We must be satisfied that, on the balance of probability, a crime of violence has taken place. This is a lower burden of proof than that required by a criminal court, which would need to prove the guilt of a defendant beyond all reasonable doubt to secure a conviction."

Barrymore was arrested on suspicion of the murder and serious sexual assault of Stuart Lubbock, but released because the Crown Prosecution Service said there was insufficient evidence to charge him.
