The majority of nominations were for newspaper Web sites. The New York Times had three nominations, including one for a Web documentary created by columnist Nicholas Kristof about the crisis in Darfur. The Times' interview series with a victim of child pornography and a feature on Bolivia were also nominated.

The Washington Post received nominations for a documentary on Azerbaijan and a video podcast about Hurricane Katrina.

Two cable networks received nominations, but none of the major television news stations were named. MTV News' series on the South Asian earthquake and National Geographic's Webcasts of Katrina both received nominations.

This is the first year the academy is honoring accomplishments in new media platforms, including computers, mobile phones and iPods.
