Saab receives Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon system contract

TROLLHäTTAN, Sweden, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Saab has received a contract to provide its new Carl-Gustaf M4 multirole weapon system, marking its fourth customer for the system since its 2014 launch.

Saab did not disclose its customer's identity, but did say the order covers an updated version of the weapon system. Enhancements include a lightweight design and a round counter. The weapon is also designed to be compatible with future installments such as intelligent sighting systems and programmable ammunition.

"With the M4 version the customer will have a weapon with the latest technology and with improved ergonomics which will give them an increased tactical flexibility to deal with any situation on the battlefield," Saab Dynamics business head Görgen Johansson said in a press release.

Saab began receiving orders for the weapon system in late 2014, with the first order coming from Slovakia. Two additional countries have also procured the device for evaluation and qualification.

The Carl-Gustaf is an 84mm recoilless rifle designed for anti-tank warfare. Users include the armed forces of Australia, Canada, Israel, the United States, and various others.
