NEW YORK, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- The rich got richer this year, by a solid 10 percent, Forbes says in its 21st annual edition of The Forbes 400.
The nation's wealthiest 400 people are now worth $995 billion. Or, as Forbes put it, "just one Bill Gates away from $1 trillion."
Gates, the Microsoft founder, was No. 1 on the list again, his worth put at $46 billion. Warren Buffett was in second place at $36 billion. Paul Allen of Microsoft was third at $22 billion.
Five members of the Sam Walton Wal-Mart family were tied for fourth at $20.5 billion.
Forbes said internet stocks led the charge through the pack. Jeff Bezos added more than $3 billion to his net worth with a tripling of Amazon's share price. Chief Yahoos David Filo and Jerry Yang nearly tripled their wealth, while the fortunes of eBay's Pierre Omidyar and Meg Whitman rose nearly 50 percent.
