Ruffalo calls brain tumor a 'blessing'

NEW YORK, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Mark Ruffalo said in New York recently he sees the brain tumor he battled a few years ago as a "blessing" because it has helped him really value his life.

"At the time, there was a lot of fear," the "In the Cut" and "You Can Count On Me" actor admitted to reporters.

"But in retrospect, now it was probably one of the greatest blessings that I've had," he said. "It really gave me an in-depth understanding of myself and my strengths and my weaknesses and it gave me a year with my son who was a year old and it gave me a year to kind of stand back and really think about what I wanted for my career and my life because things were getting really out of control at that point. It's ended up being a real blessing for me...

"I took a year off. Now it's completely behind me. I'm completely healthy and now I'm just moving on with my life."

"In the Cut" comes out on DVD and home video Tuesday.
