Ferreira's last tournament title was at the 1996 Tennis Masters Series -- Toronto. His best finish this season was at the Tennis Masters Series event in Canada in August where he lost to eventual champion Marat Safin in the semifinals.

The 29-year-old Ferreira has won 14 tournament titles in his career.

Hewitt, who eliminated Olympic gold medalist Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the semifinals, fell short of winning his fifth ATP Tour title, which would have tied him with Safin, Alex Corretja and Magnus Norman.
