Simpson signs with Blues

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 24 -- The St. Louis Blues added another free agent Thursday, signing rugged left wing Reid Simpson away from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Terms were not disclosed.

The 31-year-old Simpson started last season with the Chicago Blackhawks but was traded to Tampa Bay in November in a three-player swap involving Michael Nylander. The 6-2, 220-pound journeyman totaled one goal and 103 penalty minutes in 26 games spending part of the season with Cleveland of the International Hockey League.

"Reid is an aggressive player with size who will provide depth for our organization," said Blues General Manager Larry Pleau.

Simpson was a third-round draft pick of Philadelphia in 1989 but played just one game for the Flyers. After one game with the Minnesota North Stars in 1992-93, he spent parts of four seasons with the New Jersey Devils before moving on to Chicago during the 1997-98 season.

Simpson has 10 goals, 15 assists and 537 penalty minutes in 184 NHL games over eight seasons. He is the fifth free agent to sign with the Blues this summer, joining right wings Dallas Drake and Chris Murray, defenseman Sean Hill and goaltender Dwayne Roloson.
