Mavericks place Pack on injured list

DALLAS, Dec. 18 -- The Dallas Mavericks Saturday placed oft- injured point guard Robert Pack on the injured list with an ankle sprain.

Pack's career has been marked by numerous injuries.

The latest one occurred in Thursday's 100-93 home loss to the New York Knicks as he suffered a right ankle tendon sprain after being fouled by Larry Johnson, who received a flagrant foul on the play.

Pack is averaging 12.4 points and a team-leading 7.0 assists in 16 games this season. He missed eight contests with a groin strain before returning Dec. 7 and also currently is nursing a bruised knee and a sprained wrist.

The absence of Pack, 30, and fellow point guard Steve Nash leaves the Mavericks without a true floor general. Michael Finley and Hubert Davis, both of whom have skills better suited to shooting guard, will share the ballhandling duties.

In the last five-plus seasons with four teams, Pack has played in just 180 of a possible 402 games due to injuries.

To replace Pack on the roster, the Mavericks (8-16) activated forward Randell Jackson from the injured list prior to Saturday night's home game against Minnesota. Jackson had been sidelined since Dec. 7 with a right thigh bruise.

The 6-11 Jackson spent last season with the Washington Wizards. He has played just one minute this season.
