Expos 3, Astros 1

MONTREAL -- Dennis Martinez, one day after vetoing a trade to Atlanta, allowed one run over eight innings Friday night to lead the Montreal Expos to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros.

Martinez, 12-8, allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out four.

He was denied his third complete game of the season after a bizarre series of events saw Astros pitchers Todd Jones and Al Osuna ejected for throwing at Martinez at the plate and on base.

With one out in the eighth, Jones walked Martinez on four pitches, with two of them chasing Martinez out of the batter's box. Jones was ejected by home plate umpire Steve Rippley and replaced by Al Osuna. One out later, Rippley ejected Osuna for apparently trying to hit Martinez with a pickoff throw.

First baseman Jeff Bagwell was not holding Martinez on. Martinez was lifted for a pinch runner.

John Wetteland notched his 30th save, striking out the side in the ninth.

Jones and Osuna may have been retaliating for Martinez hitting Bagwell with a pitch in the first inning.

On Thursday, Martinez used his rights as a player with 10 years in the majors and five with one club and refused to accept a trade to the Braves.

The Expos gave Martinez all the runs he needed in the first. Marquis Grissom singled, stole scond, took third on a flyout and scored on John Vander Wal's double. Darrin Fletcher followed with his seventh homer of the season off Doug Drabek, 7-15.

Drabek has lost a career-high seven straight decisions and is tied for the major-league lead in losses. He allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings.

Craig Biggio had three hits for Houston, including an RBI double in the eighth.
