Soviet coup leaders struggle to consolidate control

MOSCOW, Aug. 19, 1991 (UPI) - The Kremlin's new rulers, moving swiftly Monday to clamp control over a nation stunned by the ouster of Mikhail Gorbachev, sent troops and tanks into the streets of Moscow and cracked down on the breakaway Baltic republics.

Gorbachev out of power; state of emergency declared

MOSCOW, Aug. 19, 1991 (UPI) - Mikhail Gorbachev was removed as president of the Soviet Union in a coup Monday and replaced by hard-line Communists led by Vice President Gennady Yanayev. A six-month state of emergency was declared and tanks moved toward the Kremlin.
Coup alert came by fax
WASHINGTON, Aug. 20, 1991 (UPI) - The first words of the coup in the Soviet Union, which ousted President Mikhail Gorbachev, may have come over a fax machine in an empty office late Sunday night. While much of Washington slept or prepared to sleep at the end of the weekend, the fax machine in the Washington office of The Center for Democracy was silently screaming the alert: ''It is Military Coup. Tanks are everywhere.''
