MILFORD, Ct. -- Frank Mulzoff, former coach at St. John's University, was named Thursday as head coach of the Long Island Knights of the United States Basketball League.

The Knights, one of eight franchises making up the USBL, will play their 1985 home games at Hofstra University.

The new league will begin play in May and continue through August.

Mulzoff, currently coaching at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue, N.Y., a Division III school, replaced Lou Carnesecca at St. John's from 1970-73. Carnesecca had left the Redmen to coach the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association.

'I love the challenge that this opportunity presents,'said Mulzoff, who is 47-47 at the Suffolk County (N.Y.) school. 'This is the same reason I chose to return to the college coaching ranks at St. Joseph's, to take a program and build it from the bottom up.'

Mulzoff, 56, has coached for 20 years.
