SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco 49ers Monday signed punter Tom Orosz of the Miami Dolphins and waived struggling punter Jim Miller.

The 49ers traded a 12th-round draft choice for Orosz, 23, a 1981 graduate of Ohio State who was beaten out in Miami's training camp by rookie Reggie Roby.

San Francisco coach Bill Walsh had been openly critical of Miller, who tentatively won the punting job in training camp when Cliff Parsley flopped badly.

However, Miller put on a poor performance with low, easy to return punts in the 49ers' loss Saturday to Seattle.
