ATHENS, Ga. -- Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker is engaged to Cindy DeAngelis, a former member of the Georgia women's track team he met in a training room whirlpool as they both underwent treatment for injuries.
A spokesman for Georgia's sports information office said Tuesday that Walker had not formally announced the wedding date, but that he had confirmed the engagement.
DeAngelis, a 21-year-old business major from Cocoa Beach, Fla., has been dating Walker for more than a year and accompanied him to a parade held in his honor last year in his home town of Wrightsville.
Her father, Thomas DeAngelis, a retired real estate agent in Cocoa Beach, said that he knew there were marriage plans, but he didn't know it had been announced.
DeAngelis said his daughter and Walker met about two years ago when they were being treated for injuries in the whirlpool of the athletic department's training room.
'I haven't spoken to Herschel and Cindy about this, but I knew they intended to get married,' Thomas DeAngelis said. 'I have met him many, many times and it has always been the same impression. He is a very exemplary gentleman. My wife feels the same way as I do.'
The couple were in Chicago Tuesday night for another of Walker's many award ceremonies. Walker's fiancee accompanied him to a series of ceremonies in Philadelphia, New York and Connecticut last week, family members said.
