MILWAUKEE -- The Tony Bettenhausen 200-mile race for Indy-style cars, a fixture at the Wisconsin State Fair Park track since 1961, will be dropped by the group that sponsors championship car racing, the Milwaukee Journal says.

The Journal Monday Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) will not schedule the race for 1983 because there are already two champ-car races in the Milwaukee area.

The Rex Mays race is in June at the fair park track and there is the CART 200 at Road America in Elkhart Lake.

Jim Engel, president of Wisconsin Auto Racing, Inc., which puts on the races at the fair park, said he has not been officially notified the race is being dropped.

'But it sure looks like we'll lose the Bettenhausen, mainly because of dollars,' he said.

Poor attendance and a low purse, he said, have hurt the race.
