Ali Fedotowsky, Katherine Heigl rescue Sochi's strays

Feb. 24 (UPI) -- It's not just the athletes taking home stray pups from the Sochi Olympics.

Former Bachelorette star Ali Fedotowsky, who worked as an Olympics correspondent for E!, picked up a pair of puppies from a shelter in the Russian city and brought them home with her to Los Angeles. She was met at the airport by Katherine Heigl and Heigl's mom Nancy, who plan to help the dogs find happy home.

The Heigls are the co-founders of the Jason Debus Heigl foundation, which finds homes and shelters for dogs. The two say they were nervous about the overseas adoption.

"We haven't done this before. We haven't done a rescue from another country," Heigl said. "I'm nervous for the dogs. It's an awfully long flight. I'm hoping it's the beginning of the good life to come."

One of the pups, Sochi, has been adopted by US bobsled and skeleton team marketing and communications director Amanda Bird. The other, Adler, is named for a town near Sochi. Both need to stay in quarantine for two weeks: Sochi has developed canine parvovirus and will treated, while Adler has a cough.
