Kirstie Alley on cocaine use: 'I was crazy'

Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Like many celebrities Kirstie Alley has enjoyed her fair share of drug use, but unlike many celebrities the actress' consumption took place before she became a Hollywood star.

In a recent interview with Howard Stern, the 62-year-old actress opened up about her life as a cocaine-consuming interior designer in Kansas.

“I didn’t do drugs until I was 25,” she said on Stern’s show Wednesday. “I got a divorce from my husband, and I started hanging out out with this guy I was sort of madly in love with. He had already done all of his drugs, but he had a lot of druggie friends.”

Alley said she had heard cocaine made people "peppy" and figured it would be fitting to try it as she was dealing with depression from getting a divorce and "[wrecking] everybody's lives."

“So I thought, ‘I’m gonna try this.’ I took one snort of cocaine, and I go, ‘Oh my god! I’m gonna do this every day for the rest of my life!'” she said.

The Look Who's Talking star went on to say that people underestimate how much drug use takes place in Kansas.

“People think there’s no drugs in Kansas,” Alley said. “Are you kidding me?! It was the relay point, I think, between East and West Coast. I didn’t do drugs in L.A. [later] at all. I did drugs only in Kansas.”

Alley added that she "did a lot of cocaine" and that she "was crazy." Her addiction got so bad she felt like she had "smashed her own life force."

She eventually confessed her problem to her parents and eventually got sober with the help of Scientology after a drunk driver killed her mother and left her father seriously injured.

“Clearly I have been intoxicated while driving,” she said of the experience that led her to sobriety.
