Gartner: Microsoft to become obsolete by 2017

According to the technology research company Gartner Inc., Microsoft will become obsolete by 2017.

In a report released Friday, Gartner Inc. said shipments of devices using Google’s Android operating system and Apple's iOS might put Microsoft out of business.

The basis of this theory is that mobile device shipments will be considerably higher than desktop and notebook computers.

“Microsoft could be completely irrelevant in three or four years if they can’t make headway in the smartphone or tablet market, where they’ve been struggling,” says The Daily Ticker's Henry Blodget.

But this isn't the first time Microsoft is doomed to fail, and comes out victorious.

As i4u news points out, in the past, Microsoft showed its capability of tapping into new markets by becoming a prominent brand name in the video game market. All they would need to do is recreate that success in the tablet and smart phone market and they'd be back in the game.
