Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Floods and landslides following a week of rain near Athens, Greece, led to the deaths of at least 10 people, the country's health ministry said Wednesday.
Severe rainstorms on Tuesday and Wednesday in Greece's Attica region damaged roads, homes and businesses. Although full damage assessments have not begun, the towns of Mandra, Megara and Nea Peramos were heavily damaged.
The Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection said Wednesday fire services have received at least 340 calls for help or rescue from homes or cars were received from those communities, whose streets now resemble fast-moving rivers. The mayor of Mandra, where at least four people died, described the conditions as Biblical, adding that everything in the town is now gone.
The Greek Coast Guard said it recovered the bodies of two men swept out to sea. The death toll is expected to rise.
The government has declared a state of emergency in the area and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras ordered the national government to aid local emergency agencies.
The area dealt with a flood in November 2016 that led to one death.
