At least 40 killed in bombings across Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- At least 40 people have been killed in four bombings across Syria on Monday, Syrian media is reporting.

The cities of Damascus, Hassakeh, Homs and Tartous were attacked between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday, but it is not known if the attacks were linked. Three of the cities are held by the Syrian government and the fourth is held by the Kurds, Syrian media reported.

The Mediterranean coastal town of Tartous suffered the greatest losses, with 30 of the casualties. The town is home to President Bashar al-Assad's Alawite sect and a Russian naval base.

A motorcycle strapped with explosives killed seven people in the Kurdish stronghold of Hasakah.

Another four were killed in a car bombing in Homs and one killed in the countryside near Damascus, the Syrian Arab News Agency said.
