Mexican navy rescues four fishermen adrift at sea for a month

TUXTLA GUTIéRREZ, Mexico, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Mexico's navy rescued four fishermen adrift at sea for 30 days near the southern state of Chiapas, military officials said.

The Secretariat of the Navy said the fishermen -- two Ecuadorians and two Colombians -- were rescued Friday after their boat ran out of fuel Oct. 1. Their fishing vessel had set sail Sept. 24 from the port of Esmeraldas in Ecuador and was discovered about 162 miles off the coast of Chiapas.

Medical officials said the four men were dehydrated and it's unclear how they survived the unplanned month at sea.

The drifting fishing boat was spotted by the Mexican navy as it flew a routine flight near Chiapas, the BBC reported.
